AI-suggested
A fix is available that adds proper bounds checking on DataOffset values in the coalesce_t2() function to prevent out-of-bounds memory access. Users should apply the official Linux kernel patches that address this issue. Since this is a kernel vulnerability, updating to a patched kernel version is the recommended remediation. No alternative mitigations are indicated in the advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client was fixed to address out-of-bounds (OOB) read and write issues caused by unvalidated DataOffset values in the coalesce_t2() function. The function previously computed data pointers directly from server-supplied DataOffset fields without validating them against buffer boundaries, allowing pointers to underflow or overflow the intended buffer. This could lead to memory corruption including overwriting header fields or reading beyond buffer limits. The flaw was present since 2005 and was resolved by adding proper lower- and upper-bound checks before memory operations.
