AI-suggested

A fix has been implemented that rejects restart table growth requests exceeding U16_MAX entries in the extend_rsttbl() function. All callers handle a NULL return, preventing the vulnerability. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this fix. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the updated kernel versions.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 filesystem driver allows crafted NTFS images to trigger out-of-bounds memory access during $LogFile replay. This occurs because the restart table growth is not properly limited to U16_MAX entries, causing an integer truncation and subsequent use-after-free condition. The flaw can be exploited by mounting a malicious NTFS image, potentially leading to kernel memory corruption with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
