A fix for this vulnerability is available and has been applied to the Linux kernel. The patch bounds the number of inner-class filter hops in htb_classify() to prevent infinite loops and ensures safe handling of NULL class returns. Users should update to a patched kernel version to remediate this issue. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's net/sched sch_htb module could cause a soft lockup or kernel panic due to an infinite loop in packet classification. This occurs because the htb_classify function does not limit the number of inner-class filter hops, allowing a filter to recursively reference itself or another inner class, causing the classification loop to spin indefinitely with the qdisc lock held. The issue can be triggered by an unprivileged user with CAP_NET_ADMIN via unshare -Urn. The vulnerability has been resolved by bounding the traversal with a hop counter and dropping packets exceeding the limit.
