A fix is available that adds validation to reject banner payload lengths smaller than 16 bytes in the Ceph messenger v2 protocol parsing code. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this patch to prevent the zero-length socket read and related kernel warnings.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's libceph component related to the Ceph messenger v2 protocol banner parsing has been resolved. The issue occurs when a client sends a banner with a payload length of 0, causing a zero-length socket read that violates an internal state machine invariant and triggers a kernel warning. The protocol expects the banner payload to contain at least 16 bytes, representing two 64-bit integers. The fix adds validation to reject payload lengths smaller than 16 bytes, preventing the problematic zero-length read and aborting the connection with a protocol error.
