A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel. Users should update to patched kernel versions that include the fix. Since this is a kernel module initialization issue, applying the official kernel updates that address CVE-2026-90163 will remediate the problem.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMB server module was resolved involving improper cleanup during module initialization failure. Specifically, when a later initializer fails, the kernel's unwind chain releases resources created after procfs and jumps directly to class_unregister(), leaving the proc tree and its per-CPU counters allocated. This resource leak occurs if module_init() returns an error.
