AI-suggested

A fix is available that changes the write operation to use copy_to_user() bounded by the optlen, preventing writes beyond the user buffer. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this patch. Since this is a kernel vulnerability, upgrading to a patched kernel version is the recommended remediation.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's phonet protocol implementation in the pep_getsockopt() function allows writing beyond the user-supplied buffer length. The function clamps the reported length to the caller's buffer size but writes a full integer (4 bytes) regardless, potentially overwriting 1 to 3 bytes past the buffer. This issue has been resolved by changing the write operation to respect the actual buffer length.
