A fix has been implemented to reject return values larger than 8 bytes for the affected BPF attach types. Users should apply the updated Linux kernel versions that include this fix. Since this is a kernel-level vulnerability, upgrading to patched kernel versions is the recommended remediation.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's BPF trampoline handling allows functions returning more than 8 bytes (specifically 16-byte __int128 values) to be improperly processed by certain BPF attach types. This causes corruption of the return value seen by the caller and the BPF program. The issue affects attach types that read the target's return value such as fexit, fmod_ret, fsession, and struct_ops trampolines. The vulnerability has been resolved by rejecting return values larger than 8 bytes for these attach types.
