Description

CVE-2026-90578 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the GPAC project's MP4Box component, specifically in the gf_list_count function within utils/list.c. This flaw allows local attackers with low privileges to manipulate the program leading to use-after-free conditions. Exploit code has been published, but exploitation requires local access. The issue is resolved by upgrading to GPAC version abi-16.23, which includes a patch identified by commit 49dee5cad329cfed310c1682703df7daa47df31a.

Technical Analysis

A use-after-free vulnerability exists in GPAC up to commit f1219cde in the gf_list_count function of utils/list.c in the MP4Box component. Local attackers with low privileges can trigger this flaw. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.8 (medium) score with local attack vector, low complexity, no user interaction, and partial impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vulnerability is fixed in GPAC version abi-16.23 by commit 49dee5cad329cfed310c1682703df7daa47df31a.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a local attacker to cause a use-after-free condition, potentially leading to program crashes or other undefined behavior affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability to a limited extent. Exploit code is publicly available, but exploitation requires local access and low privileges, limiting the attack scope.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade GPAC to version abi-16.23 or later, which contains the official fix for this use-after-free vulnerability. Applying this patch fully mitigates the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.
