CVE-2026-90774: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') in orhun rustypaste

0
High
Published: 09/13/2026 (09/13/2026, 12:31:12 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: orhun
Product: rustypaste

Description

rustypaste before 0.18.1 validates the destination path before applying the optional custom filename HTTP header, allowing attackers to bypass directory-escape checks. Attackers can supply path traversal sequences in the filename header to write files outside the configured upload directory to arbitrary locations.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in rustypaste prior to version 0.18.1 arises because the destination path is validated before the optional custom filename HTTP header is applied. This sequence allows attackers to include path traversal sequences in the filename header, effectively bypassing directory-escape checks and writing files outside the configured upload directory to arbitrary filesystem locations.

Potential Impact

An attacker can write files to arbitrary locations on the filesystem outside the intended upload directory. This could lead to unauthorized file creation or modification, potentially enabling further compromise of the system or disruption of service.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in rustypaste version 0.18.1. Users should upgrade to version 0.18.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability.
