Published: 09/13/2026 (09/13/2026, 15:30:22 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Moritz Bunkus
Product: MKVToolNix

Description

MKVToolNix up to version 101.0 contains a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the avilib library's ODML superindex parser. This occurs due to an integer overflow in 32-bit arithmetic that leads to an undersized heap allocation when parsing crafted AVI files with oversized entry counts. The vulnerability can be triggered when parsing malicious files with mkvmerge, potentially resulting in heap corruption.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-90783 is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in MKVToolNix through version 101.0. The flaw exists in the bundled avilib library's ODML superindex parser, where an integer wraparound in 32-bit arithmetic causes an undersized heap allocation. Attackers can exploit this by crafting AVI files with oversized entry counts, leading to a heap buffer overflow during parsing with mkvmerge.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to heap corruption, which may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, cause denial of service, or crash the application. The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.8 (high), reflecting the potential for high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. However, there are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

No explicit patch or remediation information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted or malicious AVI files with mkvmerge.
