Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 06:00:15 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Product: Donation Thermometer

Description

A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the Donation Thermometer WordPress plugin versions 2.2.9 up to but not including 2.3.0. The flaw arises because the plugin does not properly escape a colour value taken from a shortcode attribute before inserting it into the legend markup's attribute. This allows users with Contributor role or higher to inject arbitrary event handlers that execute when the page is viewed.

Technical Analysis

The Donation Thermometer WordPress plugin before version 2.3.0 contains a CWE-79 Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability. Specifically, it fails to escape a colour value from a shortcode attribute before using it in an attribute of the generated legend markup. This improper sanitization enables users with Contributor role and above to inject arbitrary event handlers, which execute upon page view, potentially leading to script execution in the context of other users viewing the page.

Potential Impact

Users with Contributor role or higher can exploit this vulnerability to inject malicious scripts that execute in the browsers of users viewing the affected page. This could lead to session hijacking, defacement, or other script-based attacks depending on the injected payload. The vulnerability requires authenticated user privileges at least at the Contributor level.

Mitigation Recommendations

No explicit patch or remediation details are provided in the input data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict Contributor role permissions or avoid using affected versions of the plugin.
