AI-suggested
A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel by adding synchronization to drain all in-flight direct I/O before buffered write fallback proceeds. Users should update to kernel versions that include this fix. Since this is a kernel-level issue, applying the official kernel updates from the vendor or distribution is the recommended remediation. Patch status is not explicitly stated in the provided data; therefore, check the vendor advisory for the current remediation guidance.
Description
A race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem driver can cause 'Page cache invalidation failure on direct I/O' warnings and fsync operations to return -EIO errors. This occurs due to an unprotected window between buffered write fallback and page cache flush/invalidate operations, allowing concurrent asynchronous direct I/O completions to re-dirty pages and trigger error conditions. The issue affects certain no-extent inodes and can be triggered through normal I/O paths, including concurrent overlapping direct I/O writes. The vulnerability has been resolved by adding a wait to drain all in-flight direct I/O before proceeding with buffered writes, eliminating the race condition.
