Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Neo4j
Product: @neo4j/graphql

Description

CVE-2026-92681 is a critical vulnerability in @neo4j/graphql versions from 3.23.0 up to 7.6.3 where @authentication directives applied at the schema or type level are ignored for top-level fields annotated with @cypher. This allows unauthenticated users to invoke these fields and execute Cypher statements with the privileges of the GraphQL service account, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or modification. The issue is fixed in version 7.6.4.

Technical Analysis

In @neo4j/graphql versions >=3.23.0 and <7.6.4, @authentication directives placed at the schema level or on Query or Mutation types do not apply to top-level fields annotated with @cypher. Only @authentication directives directly on individual fields are enforced. Consequently, if an application exposes a top-level @cypher field relying on schema-level or type-level authentication, unauthenticated callers can invoke the field and execute Cypher queries with the GraphQL service account's privileges. This can allow unauthorized reading and modification of data. The vulnerability is addressed in version 7.6.4.

Potential Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can invoke top-level @cypher fields without authentication, executing Cypher queries with the full privileges of the GraphQL service account. This can lead to unauthorized data disclosure and modification, posing a critical security risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade @neo4j/graphql to version 7.6.4 or later, where this issue is fixed. Until then, avoid relying solely on schema-level or type-level @authentication directives for top-level @cypher fields; instead, apply @authentication directives directly on those fields.
