Published: 09/17/2026 (09/17/2026, 13:46:09 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: patriksimek
Product: vm2

Description

CVE-2026-92949 affects the patriksimek vm2 library versions from 3.9.6 up to but not including 3.11.7. The vulnerability allows sandboxed scripts to bypass protections intended by vm.freeze() and vm.readonly() by improperly restricting access to accessor properties on frozen objects. Attackers can invoke host object setters directly, modifying properties that were explicitly marked as read-only by the embedder.

Technical Analysis

The patriksimek vm2 library versions >=3.9.6 and <3.11.7 contain a vulnerability where sandboxed scripts can bypass vm.freeze() and vm.readonly() protections. This occurs because access to accessor properties on frozen objects is not properly restricted. Attackers can use Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor() or __lookupSetter__() to extract and invoke host object setters, allowing mutation of properties that should be immutable within the sandbox environment.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability allows attackers running sandboxed scripts to modify properties that the embedder intended to be immutable or read-only. This can lead to unauthorized state changes within the host environment, potentially undermining the sandbox's security guarantees. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.3 (medium severity), indicating a moderate impact with network attack vector, high attack complexity, and partial impact on integrity and system integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in patriksimek vm2 versions 3.11.7 and later. Users should upgrade to version 3.11.7 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory data.
