Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: patriksimek
Product: vm2

Description

CVE-2026-92950 is a critical sandbox escape vulnerability in the vm2 CLI tool before version 3.11.7. It allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the host Node.js process by supplying a malicious script that re-executes itself in the host realm, bypassing sandbox isolation and accessing sensitive host modules.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in vm2 versions prior to 3.11.7 involves insecure default variable initialization in the CLI tool. An attacker can provide a malicious script file that uses require(__filename) to re-execute itself outside the sandbox, effectively escaping the sandbox environment. This bypass allows access to host Node.js modules such as fs and child_process, enabling arbitrary code execution on the host system.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in arbitrary code execution in the host Node.js process, compromising the sandbox isolation guarantees of vm2. This can lead to unauthorized access to the host filesystem and execution of system commands, posing a critical security risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade vm2 to version 3.11.7 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the affectedVersions field indicating versions before 3.11.7 are vulnerable.
