A fix is available that adds validation of the first letter in function names to prevent out-of-bounds indexing. Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this fix. Since the vulnerability requires root access to exploit, limiting root access and applying the patch mitigates the risk.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's speakup keyhelp component allowed out-of-bounds (OOB) write due to improper indexing of letter_offsets array when function names starting outside the [a–z] range were set via sysfs by root. This could lead to memory corruption. The issue was fixed by adding a check on the first letter of function names in help_init() to ensure it is within [a–z], returning an error otherwise.
