A fix is available that adds validation of segment IDs to prevent out-of-bounds memory accesses. Users should apply the updated Linux kernel versions that include these patches. Since this is a kernel vulnerability, upgrading to a patched kernel release is the recommended remediation. No additional mitigations are specified beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's dm-pcache component allows out-of-bounds read and write operations due to improper validation of cache segment IDs derived from persistent memory metadata. This flaw can lead to dereferencing wild pointers and potential memory corruption. The issue arises because the segment ID is taken from metadata protected only by a fixed public CRC seed, allowing a user with CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileges to supply crafted metadata that triggers the flaw. The vulnerability has been resolved by adding validation checks to reject out-of-range segment IDs and ensuring segment counts are properly bounded.
