A fix has been implemented and merged into the Linux kernel source (commits d4b76d0b03cb49611312ecc4bcfb55ccdf0843e2 and 5c0d7b658cda62cd17cb3652783386d5608030ef). Users and administrators should update to the patched kernel version 6.19 or later containing these commits to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's memory management subsystem involving device-private Page Middle Directories (PMDs) during madvise cold and pageout walks has been fixed. The issue arises when madvise_cold_or_pageout_pte_range() incorrectly handles device-private PMDs, causing a kernel assertion failure (VM_BUG_ON) due to unexpected non-present PMDs. This can occur when an HMM-based GPU driver races with madvise calls, leading to a potential kernel panic. The fix involves skipping device-private PMDs in the relevant code path and downgrading the assertion to a warning to prevent panics.
