Technical Analysis

BuildKit in moby contains a CWE-441 (Confused Deputy) vulnerability where it may be tricked into performing file actions on special file inodes when it expects regular files. This can lead to blocking of file operations or, in environments where BuildKit runs with root privileges, unintended access to host devices. The vulnerability affects versions >=0 and <=0.33.0. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.0, indicating medium severity, with local attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, and high scope and security impact changes.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause BuildKit to perform unintended file operations on special file types, potentially blocking operations or, if BuildKit runs with root privileges, gaining unintended access to host devices. This could disrupt build processes or expose host system resources to unauthorized access.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided at this time. Users should monitor vendor communications for updates and avoid running BuildKit with unnecessary root privileges as a precaution.
