Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a buffer overflow in the formWizSurvey function of the Edimax EW-7438RPn device firmware (versions up to 1.31). An attacker can remotely manipulate specific HTTP form parameters (ssid, manualssid, ip, mask, gateway) to cause a buffer overflow condition. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7, indicating high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vendor has not issued any patch or advisory, and the exploit is publicly available.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to remote code execution or denial of service on the affected device due to the buffer overflow. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the device. Since the exploit is public and the vendor has not responded, affected devices remain at risk. No known exploits are reported in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since the vendor has not responded or released a fix, users should consider mitigating exposure by restricting network access to the device's management interface, disabling remote management if possible, or replacing the device with a secure alternative until a patch is available.
