Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in the FUNC_DECODER function of the GG Dissector component in Ettercap versions 0.8.0 through 0.8.3. The flaw arises from improper handling of the gg argument, which can lead to memory corruption. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without privileges or user interaction, but the attack complexity is high and exploitability is difficult. A patch identified by commit feeae6fa366e01a3dd9f1857ec6aae847b2ae00c is available in version 0.8.4 to fix the issue.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could lead to heap memory corruption, potentially allowing an attacker to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code. However, the attack complexity is high and exploitability is difficult, which reduces the likelihood of widespread exploitation. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Ettercap to version 0.8.4 or later, which includes the official fix for this vulnerability as identified by patch feeae6fa366e01a3dd9f1857ec6aae847b2ae00c. No other mitigation is indicated or required.
