Vendor/Project: Vinyl-Cache
Product: Vinyl Cache

Description

CVE-2026-93894 is a low-severity out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Vinyl Cache before version 9.0.2. It affects the .upper() and .lower() string methods in the Vinyl Cache Language (VCL), allowing a workspace buffer overflow. Exploitation can cause a remote denial of service by crashing the child process, which then restarts. Successful exploitation requires detailed knowledge of the VCL and crafting a request with a string long enough to overflow the workspace but within request size limits.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-787) exists in Vinyl Cache versions prior to 9.0.2 in the .upper() and .lower() string methods of VCL. It is a workspace buffer overflow that can be triggered remotely by sending a specially crafted request string that fills the remaining workspace buffer. The result is a child process crash (segfault or assert), causing a denial of service through process restart. Exploitation requires prior knowledge of the VCL and careful crafting of input to meet size constraints.

Potential Impact

The primary impact is a remote denial of service condition where the child process crashes and restarts. There is no indication of code execution, data corruption beyond the buffer overflow, or information disclosure. The CVSS score of 2.3 reflects the low severity and limited impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Vinyl Cache version 9.0.2 and later. Users should upgrade to version 9.0.2 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Patch status is confirmed by the affected versions data. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.
