Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in 06ketan slideshot up to version 4.4.0 allows remote attackers to manipulate the htmlPath argument in the render_slides function, leading to path traversal. This can enable unauthorized access to files outside the intended directory. The issue was reported early to the project, but no fix or official response has been provided. Exploit code is publicly available, increasing the risk of exploitation.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to read arbitrary files on the system by traversing directories via the htmlPath parameter. This may lead to disclosure of sensitive information. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (medium severity), reflecting the network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official fix or patch is currently available from the vendor. Users should monitor the vendor's communications for updates. Until a patch is released, consider restricting access to the affected functionality or implementing input validation to prevent path traversal in the htmlPath argument.
