Technical Analysis

This vulnerability, classified as CWE-120 (Classic Buffer Overflow), exists in RSLinx Classic. An attacker can send a specially crafted CIP packet with an oversized embedded message request to the service, which does not properly check the size of the input before copying it. This leads to a buffer overflow that crashes the RSLinx Classic service, resulting in a denial-of-service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the RSLinx Classic service to crash, leading to denial of service. The service must be manually restarted to recover. There is no indication of code execution or data corruption beyond service disruption.
