CVE-2026-96264: CWE-121 Stack-based Buffer Overflow in IBM PowerVM Hypervisor
Description
IBM Power Systems Firmware versions FW1060.00 through FW1060.81 contain a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the service processor mailbox interface. An attacker with authenticated service-level access to the Flexible Service Processor (FSP) can exploit this flaw by sending a crafted mailbox message, leading to arbitrary code execution in the host firmware runtime. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the managed system by granting full access to system memory and hardware interfaces.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-96264 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-121) in IBM Power Systems Firmware FW1060.00 through FW1060.81 affecting the service processor mailbox interface. Authenticated attackers with service-level access to the FSP can send specially crafted mailbox messages that overflow the host firmware runtime attribute storage. Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution within the host firmware runtime environment, resulting in full control over the managed system's memory and hardware interfaces.
Potential Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker with authenticated service-level access to execute arbitrary code in the host firmware runtime, leading to full compromise of the managed system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This includes unauthorized access to system memory and hardware interfaces, potentially enabling complete system control.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided in the available data. Until a patch is available, restrict service-level access to trusted personnel only and monitor for suspicious activity related to the service processor mailbox interface.
