Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-96293) in WatchGuard Agent version 1.17.24.0000 arises from the cleartext storage of the FileVault Personal Recovery Key in a diagnostic log file that is persistently written and accessible to all local users on macOS systems. An unprivileged local user or process can read this log file to obtain the recovery key, potentially compromising the encrypted disk. The CVSS 4.0 vector indicates local attack vector with low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality.

Potential Impact

The impact is that an unprivileged local user or process can obtain the FileVault Personal Recovery Key by reading a diagnostic log file. This compromises the confidentiality of the encrypted disk's recovery key, potentially allowing unauthorized access to encrypted data on the managed macOS computer.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is provided in the vendor advisory or input data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local user access to diagnostic log files and monitor for unauthorized access attempts to mitigate risk.
