CVE-2026-96297: CWE-416 Use after free in MongoDB MongoDB Server
Description
Use of freed memory in the aggregation feature of MongoDB Server can cause the server to read data from a memory area after it has been released. When an internal aggregation stage is combined with a batch size of 0, the server may read from memory that is no longer in use. Because that memory can be reused for other data before it is read, query results returned to the client may contain unrelated data from the server process. Depending on the state of memory at the time, the server process may also terminate unexpectedly. The behavior can occur when an authenticated user with read privileges runs an aggregate command that combines these two settings.

Technical Analysis
This vulnerability involves use of freed memory in MongoDB Server's aggregation feature. When an internal aggregation stage is combined with a batch size of 0, the server may read from memory that has been released, potentially returning unrelated data to clients or causing server crashes. The flaw affects versions >=7.0 <7.0.45, >=8.0 <8.0.34, >=8.3.0 <8.3.13, and >=9.0 <9.0.2. It requires an authenticated user with read privileges to exploit via the aggregate command.
Potential Impact
An attacker with read privileges can cause the server to return incorrect query results containing unrelated data from memory or cause the server process to terminate unexpectedly. This could lead to data leakage or denial of service conditions. There is no indication of remote code execution or privilege escalation from the provided data.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is confirmed, avoid running aggregate commands with an internal aggregation stage combined with a batch size of 0. Monitor MongoDB vendor advisories for updates and apply official patches once available.
