AI-suggested

A fix is available and has been applied in the Linux kernel. The patch rejects READ responses shorter than the expected header size, preventing out-of-bounds reads. Users should update their Linux kernel to a version including the fix identified by commits e6142a8bfc230c7263eb8b0475249c958ce49367, aaa221c1b1d288845b55e9c366e5ef608dfff49d, or 0f1f77b821506a4dacab6ce7d29cf9e0c26f14cd. Additionally, avoid using SMB1 mounts unless absolutely necessary, as SMB1 is deprecated and not negotiated by default.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client allows a malicious SMB1 server to send short READ responses that cause the client to read beyond the buffer boundary in CIFSSMBRead(). This occurs because the function does not verify the response length before accessing header fields. The issue affects explicit SMB1 mounts, as SMB1 is not negotiated by default. The vulnerability has been fixed by rejecting responses shorter than the expected READ_RSP size.
