Users and administrators should update affected Linux kernel versions to a fixed release to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2026-97612 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's MPLS networking code. It occurs because the inner_protocol field is not cleared when the last MPLS label is popped from a packet, causing stale network header offsets to persist. This can lead to a negative network header offset and an out-of-bounds memory copy of approximately 4 GiB, potentially causing kernel crashes or memory corruption. The issue affects Linux kernel version 4.9 and was fixed in subsequent commits. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8, indicating high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.
