Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-97631 is a classic buffer overflow vulnerability in the TianoCore EDK2 BIOS. It involves improper handling of buffer sizes during memory copy operations, resulting in out-of-bounds writes. Exploitation requires remote access and can lead to arbitrary code execution, affecting system confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.5, indicating critical severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high impact on all security properties.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution on the affected BIOS, compromising system confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This could allow attackers to execute malicious code at a low level, potentially controlling the system firmware and bypassing security controls.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is released, limit remote access to affected systems and monitor for suspicious activity related to BIOS interactions.
