A fix is available and has been applied in the mainline Linux kernel starting from commit cdd812d0683dee14ead02c9eded568685e61b23f and related commits bcb0936862f2b653114d9bd582ca26990ef54a64 and 96803a12e8ac15f0a1b4b151db59038f12304e58. Users and administrators should update to a fixed kernel version to mitigate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2026-97903 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel related to improper reference handling of thread_pid across proc_flush_pid during task exit. The flaw arises because release_task() incorrectly assumes that free_pids() will keep thread_pid alive, but under certain conditions, the PID can be freed prematurely, leading to a kernel slab-use-after-free error detected by KASAN. This issue affects Linux kernel versions 6.16 and potentially others in the 6.16 to 6.19 range. No privilege escalation or information leak is claimed. The vulnerability has been fixed in specific commits in the mainline kernel.
