Fixed versions are available in Linux kernel releases 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, and 7.2.8 and later. Users and administrators should upgrade to these or later kernel versions to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are specified by the vendor advisory.
Description
CVE-2026-98174 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMB client implementation. It involves a race condition and missing initialization in the TCP_Server_Info.rlist linked list handling, which can lead to list corruption. The flaw arises because the rlist is zero-initialized rather than properly self-referenced, causing list operations to dereference null pointers. Concurrent calls to cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect() can add the same server node multiple times, corrupting the list. This vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases.
