A fix is available and has been applied in multiple Linux kernel commits. Users and administrators should update to a Linux kernel version that includes the fix (commits such as f6e2ab72f32d16d71a2549c7ea062dd209f71670 and others listed). No additional mitigation is required once the system is updated.
Description
CVE-2026-98197 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's hwmon driver for the w83791d device. The issue arises because the fan/pwm 4-5 sysfs group is not properly removed during the normal driver removal process, leaving behind sysfs files that reference freed driver data. This can lead to accesses to stale memory after the driver is unbound. The flaw was identified through manual code inspection and has been fixed in subsequent kernel commits.
