AI-suggested
A fix is available and has been applied in multiple Linux kernel commits. Users and administrators should update affected Linux kernel versions to the fixed releases that include the referenced commits. Since this is a kernel-level issue, applying the official patches or upgrading the kernel is the recommended remediation. No alternative mitigations are indicated.
Description
CVE-2026-98252 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's RDMA core subsystem involving a reference count bug in the iwpm_get_nlmsg_request() function. The flaw occurs because the reference count is initialized after the object is added to a global list, allowing concurrent CPUs to increment a zero reference count, leading to a refcount addition on zero. This bug can cause memory corruption or use-after-free conditions. The issue is fixed by initializing the reference count before adding the object to the list and ensuring all fields are initialized beforehand. The vulnerability affects Linux kernel version 3.16 and has been addressed in multiple subsequent commits.
