A fix is available in the Linux kernel, as indicated by the presence of fixed versions identified by commit hashes. Users should update to a fixed kernel version that includes these patches to remediate the memory leak. No additional mitigation steps are indicated or required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
CVE-2026-98509 is a memory leak vulnerability in the Linux kernel's drm/virtio driver. It occurs when an execbuffer operation fails, causing a DRM event to be reserved but never properly cancelled or freed. This results in a permanent memory leak as the event remains orphaned without being released. The issue was discovered through fuzzing with Syzkaller and affects Linux kernel version 5.16.
