A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel as indicated by multiple fixed commit versions. Users and administrators should update their Linux kernel to a version that includes these fixes to mitigate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official kernel patches.
Description
CVE-2026-98981 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel related to the handling of dentries during unlink, rmdir, and rename operations. The flaw involves a race condition where a dentry remains hashed and visible in the dcache after mounts have been detached but before the dentry is deleted. This can allow lookups to access mountpoints that should no longer be visible, potentially exposing hidden filesystem mounts. The issue affects mountpoints in other mount namespaces and creates a race window that can be exploited by concurrent lookups. The vulnerability has been fixed by changing the order of operations to unhash the dentry before detaching mounts, preventing lookups from seeing stale mountpoints during the race window.
