Duplicate Advisory: uutils coreutils has a Link Following issue

Published: 04/22/2026 (04/22/2026, 18:31:45 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: coreutils

Description

### Duplicate Advisory This advisory has been withdrawn because it is a duplicate of GHSA-h444-6j9x-p8vh. This link is maintained to preserve external references. ### Original Description The mv utility in uutils coreutils improperly handles directory trees containing symbolic links during moves across filesystem boundaries. Instead of preserving symlinks, the implementation expands them, copying the linked targets as real files or directories at the destination. This can lead to resource exhaustion (disk space or time) if symlinks point to large external directories, unexpected duplication of sensitive data into unintended locations, or infinite recursion and repeated copying in the presence of symlink loops.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in uutils coreutils affects the mv utility's handling of symbolic links during moves across filesystem boundaries. Rather than preserving symbolic links, the utility expands them, copying the contents of the linked targets. This can lead to resource exhaustion from copying large external directories, inadvertent duplication of sensitive data into unintended locations, or infinite recursion in the presence of symlink loops. The issue is tracked under GHSA-66fx-fqv6-5wwx and affects versions prior to 0.7.0. The advisory is a duplicate of GHSA-h444-6j9x-p8vh and no patch links are provided in this data.

Potential Impact

Improper handling of symbolic links can cause resource exhaustion (disk space or processing time), duplication of sensitive data in unintended locations, and infinite recursion resulting in repeated copying. This can degrade system performance and potentially expose sensitive information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no patch links are provided, users should monitor the official uutils coreutils advisories for updates. Until a fix is available, avoid moving directory trees containing symbolic links across filesystem boundaries using this utility or use alternative tools that correctly preserve symlinks.
