Product: coreutils

Description

### Duplicate Advisory This advisory has been withdrawn because it is a duplicate of GHSA-xv5w-cw7x-72gj. This link is maintained to preserve external references. ### Original Description The id utility in uutils coreutils exhibits incorrect behavior in its "pretty print" output when the real UID and effective UID differ. The implementation incorrectly uses the effective GID instead of the effective UID when performing a name lookup for the effective user. This results in misleading diagnostic output that can cause automated scripts or system administrators to make incorrect decisions regarding file permissions or access control.

Technical Analysis

In uutils coreutils (<=0.8.0), the id utility's pretty print output misrepresents the effective user identity by using the effective group ID (GID) instead of the effective user ID (UID) during name lookup when the real UID and effective UID differ. This results in misleading output that may cause incorrect administrative or automated responses related to file permissions or access control. The issue is a user interface misrepresentation (CWE-451) with no direct confidentiality or availability impact.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes incorrect display of user identity information, potentially leading to improper administrative decisions or script actions based on misleading output. There is no direct compromise of confidentiality or availability. The integrity of diagnostic information is affected, which may indirectly impact system management accuracy.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently documented for this issue. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should be aware of the misrepresentation in the id utility output and verify user identity information through alternative means if real and effective UIDs differ.
