Source: GCVE Database

Description

Vikunja versions up to 2.5.0 have a vulnerability where the application does not limit archive expansion during data import. Authenticated users can upload specially crafted compressed files that expand massively in memory and disk usage, causing denial of service by exhausting server resources. This vulnerability is fixed starting from version 2.6.0.

Technical Analysis

Vikunja before version 2.6.0 fails to impose limits on archive expansion during data import operations. This allows authenticated users to upload compressed files that decompress into very large sizes, potentially tens of gigabytes, overwhelming server memory and disk resources. The result is a denial of service condition where the Vikunja instance crashes or becomes unresponsive due to resource exhaustion.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability leads to denial of service (DoS) by allowing attackers to consume excessive server resources (memory and disk) through decompression bombs during data import. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Vikunja to version 2.6.0 or later, where this issue is fixed by limiting archive expansion during data import. No other mitigation is indicated. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 2.6.0.
