Description

FFmpeg versions before 8.1.3 and 9.x before 9.0.2 have an improper certificate validation vulnerability in the tls_open() function of libavformat/tls_mbedtls.c. This flaw causes hostname checks to be skipped for IP-address hosts, allowing network attackers to intercept and tamper with HTTPS, RTMPS, or TLS connections to IP-literal URLs using any trusted CA-issued certificate.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FFmpeg affects versions prior to 8.1.3 and 9.x prior to 9.0.2. It is located in the tls_open() function within libavformat/tls_mbedtls.c, where improper certificate validation occurs by skipping hostname verification for IP-address hosts. This allows an attacker on the network to intercept encrypted streams (HTTPS, RTMPS, TLS) directed at IP-literal URLs and manipulate or read the data if they present any trusted CA-issued certificate, bypassing intended hostname verification.

Potential Impact

An attacker capable of intercepting network traffic to IP-literal URLs can exploit this vulnerability to read and tamper with encrypted streams, potentially compromising confidentiality and integrity of the data transmitted over HTTPS, RTMPS, or TLS connections. The CVSS score of 4.8 reflects a medium severity with low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FFmpeg versions 8.1.3 and 9.0.2 or later. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the improper certificate validation vulnerability. No vendor advisory content was provided to indicate alternative mitigations or that the issue is already mitigated.
