Description

FFmpeg versions before 8.1.3 have a protection mechanism failure in the HLS demuxer. This flaw allows attackers to bypass protocol and allowed_extensions restrictions when opening child playlists. By supplying a crafted master playlist with child playlists using disallowed protocols or non-multimedia local files, attackers can cause parse_playlist() to open resources that should be blocked by the HLS security policy. The vulnerability has a medium severity with a CVSS score of 4.3.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FFmpeg prior to version 8.1.3 involves a failure in the protection mechanisms of the HLS demuxer. Specifically, attackers can bypass protocol and allowed_extensions restrictions by crafting a master playlist whose child playlists reference disallowed protocols or non-multimedia local files. This causes the parse_playlist() function to open resources that the HLS security policy is designed to block, potentially leading to unintended resource access.

Potential Impact

The impact is limited to the ability of an attacker to bypass HLS demuxer security restrictions, potentially causing FFmpeg to open disallowed or local files. The CVSS score of 4.3 indicates a medium severity impact with limited confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FFmpeg version 8.1.3. Users should upgrade to version 8.1.3 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigation guidance is provided or necessary given the availability of an official fix.
