Description

FFmpeg versions through 9.0.2 have a stack exhaustion vulnerability in the av_encryption_init_info_free() function within libavutil/encryption_info.c. This function recursively frees linked lists created by the MOV demuxer's mov_read_pssh(). An attacker can craft an MP4 file containing many small pssh boxes to trigger this vulnerability, causing stack exhaustion, process crashes, and quadratic CPU usage.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-107678 describes a stack exhaustion vulnerability in FFmpeg up to version 9.0.2. The flaw exists in av_encryption_init_info_free(), which recursively frees AVEncryptionInitInfo linked lists constructed by the MOV demuxer's mov_read_pssh() function. By providing a malicious MP4 file with tens of thousands of small pssh boxes, an attacker can exhaust the stack, leading to a crash and excessive CPU consumption due to quadratic complexity in processing.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in denial of service by crashing the FFmpeg process and causing high CPU usage. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The attack requires local access to supply a crafted MP4 file and user interaction, as indicated by the CVSS vector.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided at this time.
