Five days before the French supermarket fridge attack, France had more exposed Danfoss StoreView dashboards than the rest of the world combined
Description
In October 2026, hundreds of French supermarkets experienced a cyberattack that forced refrigeration systems into defrost mode, causing equipment damage and food loss. The attack targeted Danfoss StoreView dashboards, which manage refrigeration controllers. France had 1,331 exposed dashboards—more than the rest of the world combined—with 85% running software with known security flaws, including many end-of-life controllers. These systems had been exposed online for months prior to the attack. After the incident, most affected stores disconnected their dashboards rather than patching them. The exact attack vector remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
Reddit Discussion
I work at IPinfo, which runs weekly scans of the IPv4 Internet. After the October 11–12 attack that pushed refrigeration in hundreds of French supermarkets into defrost, we went back through those scans to count Danfoss StoreView dashboards, the web front end for the AK-SM controllers named in the reports.
What the October 6–7 scan found:
- 2,528 addresses with a StoreView dashboard, in 73 countries and territories
- France: 1,331 (53%), more than everywhere else combined. Then Poland 179, US 101, Portugal 92, Belgium 85
- 85% of the French ones ran software with known flaws: 527 end-of-life AK-SM 800 units, 280 missing the 2023 fixes, 329 missing the 2025 fixes. Only 195 had every fix. The rest of the world was about the same (84%), so France had more of them online, not worse patching
- 98% sat on telecom networks, not in data centers. That fits a controller on the store’s own line, opened up for a technician or head office
- Not new: 1,019 of the French addresses were already open on March 30
After the attack, the October 14 scan found 316 of the 1,331 French dashboards still online, a 76% drop against a normal 3–7% a week. Fully patched units dropped too (195 → 54), so stores disconnected rather than patched. Censys saw a similar 71% drop.
Method: the newer UI is matched on page title, the older AK-SM 800 on its web server plus the Flash loader page, and the firmware generation comes from the build date the dashboard shows. Counts are addresses on the ports we scan, so they’re a floor. AK-SC 355 units may be missing. We removed 16 non-Danfoss devices that share the old web server, and two honeypot-like hosts.
What we can’t say is how the attackers got in. Exposure isn’t proof that this was the way in.

Technical Analysis
On October 11-12, 2026, a cyberattack pushed refrigeration systems in hundreds of French supermarkets into defrost mode, damaging equipment and causing food spoilage. Analysis of Internet scans revealed 2,528 Danfoss StoreView dashboards exposed globally, with France alone accounting for 1,331 (53%). Approximately 85% of these French dashboards ran software with known vulnerabilities, including 527 end-of-life AK-SM 800 controllers and many missing critical patches from 2023 and 2025. These dashboards were mostly connected via telecom networks and had been exposed for at least six months. Post-attack scans showed a 76% reduction in exposed French dashboards, indicating many stores disconnected their systems instead of patching. The attack method is not confirmed, and CERT-FR has issued advisories recommending disconnection or restricted access to affected controllers. The incident highlights widespread exposure of vulnerable industrial control systems in retail refrigeration.
Potential Impact
The attack caused refrigeration units in hundreds of French supermarkets to enter defrost mode, leading to equipment overheating (up to 50°C), fires, and significant food spoilage. Financial losses are estimated in the millions of euros. The exposure of vulnerable Danfoss StoreView dashboards facilitated potential unauthorized access to refrigeration controllers. The incident disrupted operations of major French retail chains including Carrefour, Intermarché, Netto, Monoprix, Leclerc, and Coopérative U. The widespread presence of unpatched and end-of-life controllers increased the risk and impact of the attack. The attack also prompted a significant reduction in exposed dashboards as stores disconnected affected systems.
Defensive Guidance
CERT-FR advises operators to disconnect vulnerable Danfoss AK-SM and AK-SC controllers from the Internet or restrict network access to authorized personnel only. After the attack, many stores disconnected their dashboards rather than applying patches. Operators should verify insurance terms before cutting off data access to refrigeration contractors. Since many affected controllers are end-of-life and no longer supported, disconnection or network segmentation is recommended. Monitoring for ongoing attack campaigns is advised as CERT-FR indicates attacks may still be active. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed in the data; operators should consult Danfoss and CERT-FR advisories for updates and remediation guidance.
