Description

Flatpak versions prior to 1.16.4 contain a vulnerability in the ld.so caching mechanism where outdated cache files are removed without properly verifying that the path to the outdated cache is within the cache directory. This flaw allows Flatpak applications to delete arbitrary files on the host system. The issue is resolved in Flatpak version 1.16.4.

Technical Analysis

Flatpak is a Linux application sandboxing and distribution framework. In versions before 1.16.4, the ld.so caching process removes outdated cache files but fails to properly check that the application-controlled path to the outdated cache resides within the intended cache directory. This improper validation enables Flatpak applications to delete arbitrary files on the host system, posing an integrity risk. The vulnerability is fixed in version 1.16.4.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling a Flatpak application can exploit this vulnerability to delete arbitrary files on the host system, potentially disrupting system integrity or availability. There is no confidentiality impact reported. The vulnerability does not require privileges or user interaction to exploit.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in Flatpak version 1.16.4. Users and administrators should upgrade to version 1.16.4 or later to remediate this issue. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
