Description

FreeRDP versions before 3.32.0 contain a vulnerability in the freerdp_http_request() function where TLS handshakes are completed without proper server certificate chain validation. This flaw allows on-path attackers to impersonate login.microsoftonline.com during the Azure AD authentication process, potentially capturing OAuth authorization codes and substituting the OpenID discovery document. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.8, indicating a high severity level.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FreeRDP 3.0.0 prior to 3.32.0 is due to improper certificate validation in the freerdp_http_request() function located in libfreerdp/utils/http.c. This flaw causes the TLS handshake to complete without verifying the server's certificate chain, enabling on-path attackers to impersonate the legitimate Azure AD authentication endpoint (login.microsoftonline.com). Exploiting this, attackers can capture OAuth authorization codes and replace the OpenID discovery document, compromising authentication security.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker positioned on the network path to impersonate the Azure AD authentication server, leading to the capture of OAuth authorization codes and substitution of OpenID discovery documents. This compromises the confidentiality and integrity of the authentication process, potentially enabling unauthorized access to protected resources. The vulnerability does not impact availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FreeRDP version 3.32.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 3.32.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No vendor advisory content was provided to indicate alternative mitigations or temporary fixes.
