Description

FreeRDP before 3.29.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the TSMF FFmpeg decoder when parsing AVC1 MPEG2VIDEOINFO media types with insufficient ExtraData. Attackers can send malformed media format data from a server to trigger a crash by reading fixed offsets without validating source buffer length.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FreeRDP prior to version 3.29.0 is a heap out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) in the TSMF FFmpeg decoder component. It is triggered when the decoder parses AVC1 MPEG2VIDEOINFO media types that contain insufficient ExtraData. An attacker controlling the server can send malformed media format data that causes the client to read beyond the allocated heap buffer, resulting in a crash. This vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but causes a denial of service via application crash. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.5 (high severity) with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impact limited to availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a denial of service condition due to a heap out-of-bounds read causing the FreeRDP client to crash. There is no reported impact on confidentiality or integrity. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely by a malicious server sending crafted media format data.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FreeRDP version 3.29.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 3.29.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Patch status is confirmed by the version boundary in the description. No additional mitigations are specified.
