Description

FreeRDP versions before 3.32.0 have a double-free vulnerability in the function nsc_context_initialize_encode(). This flaw occurs after a partial buffer growth failure, leaving dangling plane pointers. An attacker using a specially crafted RDP client can negotiate NSCodec with a large desktop geometry to trigger an allocation failure, causing the server to crash during context teardown. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 5.9 and is classified as high severity due to its potential to cause denial of service.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FreeRDP prior to version 3.32.0 is a double-free issue in the nsc_context_initialize_encode() function. It arises when a partial buffer growth failure leaves dangling pointers to planes, which are then freed twice. An attacker can exploit this by negotiating the NSCodec with a large desktop geometry, triggering an allocation failure that leads to a crash of the server during the context teardown phase. This vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but results in high availability impact (denial of service).

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the FreeRDP server to crash, resulting in denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity according to the CVSS vector. The attack requires network access with high attack complexity and no privileges or user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FreeRDP version 3.32.0. Users should upgrade to version 3.32.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified.
