Description

FreeRDP versions prior to 3.32.0 have a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the client video redirection channel. This flaw allows a malicious server to crash the client by sending out-of-order messages, specifically a Geometry CLEAR message followed by VideoData that dereferences a null pointer. The vulnerability results in a denial of service condition on the client side.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109241 describes a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in FreeRDP before version 3.32.0. The issue occurs in the client video redirection channel where a malicious server can send a Geometry CLEAR message that sets the presentation->geometry pointer to NULL. Subsequent VideoData messages then dereference this null pointer, causing the client application to crash. This vulnerability can be exploited to cause a denial of service on the client by crashing it remotely.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows remote denial of service against FreeRDP clients by malicious servers. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected. The CVSS score is 3.1 (low severity), reflecting the limited impact and the requirement for user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FreeRDP version 3.32.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 3.32.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until then, caution should be exercised when connecting to untrusted servers. Patch status is confirmed by the version boundary in the description.
