Description

FreeRDP versions from 2.0.0 up to but not including 3.32.0 contain a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the server hash-callback NTLM authentication path. This flaw arises from failure to properly validate the MIC offset, allowing unauthenticated attackers to send a crafted AUTHENTICATE_MESSAGE that writes 16 zero bytes beyond the allocated memory.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FreeRDP affects versions starting from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0. It is a heap out-of-bounds write in the server hash-callback NTLM path caused by improper validation of the MIC offset. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted AUTHENTICATE_MESSAGE containing backward session-key and MIC offsets, resulting in a write of 16 zero bytes beyond the allocated heap buffer. This can lead to integrity and availability impacts on the affected system.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to cause a heap out-of-bounds write, which can lead to denial of service or potentially arbitrary code execution due to memory corruption. The CVSS score of 7.4 (high) reflects the network attack vector with high impact on integrity and availability, but no confidentiality impact is indicated.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official patch or fix links are provided in the available data. Until a fix is available, cautious handling of FreeRDP server deployments is advised.
