A fix for this vulnerability is available in WordPress 7.1.4 and has been backported to all supported branches back to version 4.7. The patch randomizes the staging directory, adds an index guard, and prevents unsafe promotion of staged configuration data. Site administrators should update to WordPress 7.1.4 or later immediately to mitigate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official patch.
Description
A high-severity unauthenticated race condition vulnerability in WordPress's Core update process allows remote code execution. The flaw arises from predictable, web-accessible staging directories during updates, enabling attackers to exploit a narrow time window while WordPress unpacks updates. WordPress 7.1.4 and earlier branches have been patched to randomize staging directories and prevent unsafe configuration promotion. Exploitation attempts began shortly after patch release, but no successful compromises have been reported.
